Early Years Benchmarks (Reception) — Reference
This page exists as a reference point, not a prescription. It answers the question:
“are we broadly within a normal range?” It is not used to drive daily learning or apply pressure.
We care about trajectory over time, not synchronisation with school timelines.
End of Reception (Typical Range)
Communication & Language
Goals: Listen, understand, and follow instructions; speak confidently; ask and answer questions.
Home learning ideas:
- Daily conversations (describe the day, talk through plans)
- Reading aloud and discussing the story
- Retelling stories in their own words
- Role play (shops, doctors, “school”, restaurants)
- Describe objects, feelings, and experiences (“tell me about…”)
Personal, Social & Emotional Development
Goals: Manage emotions; build relationships; show independence and confidence.
Home learning ideas:
- Name emotions (“you seem frustrated—what do you think that is?”)
- Turn-taking games
- Practise dressing independently
- Snack prep (simple routines: choose, prepare, tidy)
- Family routines with small responsibilities
Physical Development
Goals: Gross and fine motor control; use tools safely; understand healthy habits.
Home learning ideas:
- Outdoor play (running, jumping, balancing)
- Climbing (parks, soft play, safe bouldering-style play)
- Ball games (throwing, catching, kicking)
- Playdough and putty (pinch, roll, cut)
- Cutting, drawing, painting
- Cooking together (stirring, pouring, safe tool use)
Literacy
Goals: Recognise letter sounds; blend words; read simple sentences; write words and sentences.
Home learning ideas:
- Phonics games (sound hunts, sound sorting, “what starts with…?”)
- Decodable books (short, confidence-building)
- Name writing (then short captions)
- Shopping lists (real purpose writing)
- Labels around the house
- Cards and notes to family members
Mathematics
Goals: Count to 20+; recognise numbers; compare amounts; understand shapes and patterns.
Home learning ideas:
- Counting everyday objects (steps, toys, fruit)
- Board games with dice and number tracks
- Sorting (by size, colour, type)
- Cooking measurements (spoons, cups, “more/less”, “half”)
- Building and copying patterns (blocks, beads, stickers)
Understanding the World
Goals: Talk about past and present; understand community; explore nature; use technology.
Home learning ideas:
- Family photos and simple stories about the past
- Nature walks (seasons, weather, plants, animals)
- Mark celebrations and traditions
- Simple maps (where we live, where family lives, trips)
- Simple experiments (float/sink, magnets, plants)
- Use technology to take photos and record short clips
Expressive Arts & Design
Goals: Express ideas creatively; use materials; imaginative play; respond to music.
Home learning ideas:
- Painting and drawing
- Junk modelling (build, tape, glue, iterate)
- Singing and dancing
- Imaginative play (dressing up, role play)
- Small world play (figures, vehicles, blocks, scenes)
